ATELIER ON DANCE & CRAFT (Laboratories)

A collaboration with Sébastien Seixas-instrument maker

Our meeting was the starting point for a research in our own practices, looking for what unites and what separates them.

In this process, the main difference we found was in the intention of the movement; in instrument making, the purpose (the construction of an instrument) determines all the movements, from their quality to the order that they are being executed.

With the idea of disconnecting the movement from its purpose, we have come to some sort of deconstruction of the work of the instrument maker. Where the movement is creating the object that in turn will generate the sound (movement -> object -> sound), we came to an installation where the object, a wooden box, causes the movement which creates the sound (object -> movement and sound), and the movement instead of making, basically destroys the object.

Choreographic phrases, written based on Motif Notation are running across the surfaces of the cube and are inscribed in the material by the maker, thus creating new movement. His movement, its acoustical footprint, becomes the raw material of the performance.
